Copenhagen, Denmark

Ok, before I even start the post about our experiences in Copenhagen, I want to draw your attention to this blog about stylish biking in Copenhagen called Copenhagen Cycle Chic.  It's got great pictures and I love their sense of humour.  It feels a bit like a love-letter to urban biking and it perfectly sums up my feelings of biking in Karlsruhe.   Check it out.

Ok, moving on to our trip.

Friday April 11, 2008

We embarked on Friday night on our second night train experience.  This time we didn't have a private room but booked two beds in a six bed compartment.  We were lucky to meet a university exchange student from California named Melissa and the three of us had the compartment to ourselves.

Saturday April 12, 2008

We awoke on the train and were ready to disembark by 9:30 (the train was to arrive at 10:00 AM).  As 10:00 came and went and we still hadn't arrived I finally thought to talk to a train conductor.  Turns out the train was delayed by almost two hours!

By the time we arrived, found our hotel and got back out on the streets of Copenhagen, it was already early afternoon.

We started our day with a stroll down the Strøget, a pedestrian shopping street and had a Polse, or hot dog, from one of the street vendors.  We noticed a lot of equestrian statues and spires.

And of course, lots of bikes!

We hopped on to a boat tour.

On the boat.

The picturesque docks of Copenhagen.

Picking up more passengers.  They're ready with six packs.

This is the Nyhavn (or New Harbor) dock.

Woosh!

The industrial part of the harbor.

Another boat lining up to see the Little Mermaid Statue.

There she is.

Toby took this cool shot of my scarf.

Back to the Nyhavn dock.  Just sitting with our feet hanging and enjoying the sunshine.

The Marble Church.  It was closed so we couldn't go inside but decided to go back on Sunday.

We stopped for "lunch" at 5:00 at a small cafe.  The food was wonderful but expensive.  Copenhagen seemed to be the most expensive place we've been so far.

Walking from the cfe to the Little Mermaid statue.

Some Danes getting their picture with the mermaid.

The entrance to Tivoli amusement park. Unfortunately it was still closed.

Me with good ol' Hans Christian Anderson.

National Museum.  We learned about Danish history and culture.

Colorful historical costumes.

On the way back to the Marble Church.

On a special tour of the dome.

Views from the dome.

Some people enjoying their rooftop.

We went for a sample plate of open faced sandwiches... yum!  Then we killed time before our night train by relaxing in a park.

Waiting for our train.  Check out the green hair!

Waiting to see who we were sharing our compartment with.

The Danish countryside whizzing by at sunset.  Our trip was too short.  See you next time.
