Offenberg & Fasching

Saturday January 13, 2008

Last Saturday Toby and I were fortunate to get to tag along with Toby's co-worker and friend Mario to the Fasching parade in Offenburg. Offenburg is approximately one hour south on the train. We were there in the fall when Mario took us on the best bike ride ever.

People from all over the region dressed in traditional costumes (each town has it's own costume/mask) and paraded through town. There were some fun, upbeat brass bands too. Some people threw candy and I got beaned in the head once (just a warm up for the much larger treats tossed in Köln's Carnival) but mostly they handed the candy to the children along the route. Mario's son Lewis left with his pockets full.

Before the parade started we walked through town.

The Rathaus or town hall where the parade ended.

Sculptures.

Little princesses.

The parade begins... I couldn't help taking picture after picture as each group came by. Here are the highlights.

This is the costume of Mario's town.

It got pretty cold when the sun went down. Lewis's pockets are starting to bulge.

Mario and his sister's family. Thanks for a great day everyone!
