On Saturday we headed out on another tour. This one took us to the neighbouring country of France, in the Alsace region. We started at a castle called "Haut Kœnigsbourg". It was destroyed in the Thirty Years War and then left as a ruin. In the early nineteen hundreds it was restored by the German emperor Wilhelm II.
The castle is located VERRRRRRY high up on a hill. From the ground it just looks like a really fat tree trunk. Getting up there on foot must have been agonizing! This is a view of the town Sélestat below.

The Castle was surprisingly crowded. Most families seemed to be speaking French.

There were so many neat details thanks to the restoration, like this spiral staircase. It was very interesting to see what the castle would have looked like, rather than just a ruin.
A pretty amazing view out those windows... unless you're scared of heights!
Toby is demonstrating why they built little seats next to the windows - to maximize the use of sunlight for things like sewing.
The drawbridge!!! Cool!!!
This castle was HUGE!
After we had got our fill of this very cool castle, we proceeded one hour north to Strasbourg to see the Cathedral, Petit France and have some dinner. We made it to the Cathedral with 20 minutes to spare before it closed and took a look inside. We were treated to organ music as we strolled around the massive cathedral. I had forgotten just how BIG it is!
The fancy cookie shop that we go to every time we're there.
The canals of Petit France.
After a nice dinner with delicious beer and a stroll around town, it was time to head home. Another great day!
